Mrs. Angela Smith
PreK4

Enthusiastic and dynamic is how I would describe Mrs. Angie Smith. She has been at St. Mary Catholic School since her first daughter began prek 20 years ago. Not only has Mrs. Smith been a PreK-4 teacher since 1993, but she started teaching a middle school leadership class in 2009 and will take on the role as Cheerleader Coach this year. She has had many roles throughout the years of being on the Hornet team. Some of the roles include being the room mom for her daughters during their education experience at St. Mary Catholic School, leading the PTO as treasurer, secretary, vice president, president and fundraising chairperson over the years, serving on the accreditation team for the Diocese of Beaumont, directing the Summer Fun Program from 1993-2002, becoming a Student Council Advisor in 1999, working as the teacher on duty in After Care and then becoming the director several years ago. Mrs. Smith is one involved woman!
Mrs. Angie Smith is also the winner of several prestigious awards. She has been recognized as Teacher of the Year for St. Mary Catholic School in 2003 and 2008. She has also received the Fellowship award from the Diocese of Beaumont and was recently a nominee for the Reaud Award. Mrs. Smith is also a state award winning student council advisor. She was honored with the Eddie G Bull Award this past November and has been voted the District 17 Middle School Advisor of the Year three times. She consistently leads her student council to bring home the prize as one of the top 3 state recognized schools in Energy & Environment and D.A.S.H.
Outside the school, Mrs. Smith is also involved in numerous community organizations. She has been a lifelong member of St. Mary Catholic Church. She currently serves as lector, Eucharistic minister, and a member of the reception ministry. Mrs. Smith has also held the position of co-director of the church youth group while her daughters were in high school. Mrs. Smith is also involved in the Orange County Aggie Moms’ Club, currently holding the position of President at Large. She has been a member for five years since her youngest daughter became an Aggie in 2006 and has held the position of 4th Vice President, Treasurer, and President over the years. Lastly, Mrs. Smith is also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. She is honored to have joined in 2009.
The first day of school will be the 30th anniversary for Mrs. Smith and husband, Bruce. They have two daughters, the oldest being Krystal, who is married to Staff Sergeant Travis Johnson and has a beautiful four year old named Haley. Their youngest daughter is Ashton Smith. She is a Texas A&M graduate working in Houston.
Mrs. Smith is excited about meeting all her students and their families for this upcoming school year!

Mrs. Susie Thompson
Kindergarten

I am celebrating my 20th year at St. Mary School this year.  I am very happy and proud to be part of the St. Mary family.  The school has been a big part of our family.  My husband Greg, and daughters Stephanie and Holly are all St. Mary alumni.  I am the product of Catholic education as well. I graduated from St. Pius X School in Beaumont. My duties at St. Mary have varied over the years.  I started in PreK 3, went to PreK 4, taught PreK through 8th grade art, finally landing in Kindergarten which is the love of my life!!
On a personal note, I graduated from Lamar with a degree in Social Work.  I worked at Southeast Texas Hospice for about 12 years. After my daughters were born I worked part time wanting to be with my girls.  When my oldest daughter, Stephanie was in PreK3, I was fascinated how the teachers interacted with the children and was impressed by the teaching of young children. I was amazed what the teachers could teacher these young children.  I decided to go back to school and work on an education degree.  I finished with a degree in Early Childhood with a Kindergarten Certification.
I grew up in Beaumont attending St. Pius X Church and School. I graduated from French High School in 1977 and attended Lamar until I graduated in 82’I am married to Greg Thompson (27 years) and have two daughters.  Stephanie is 23 and will graduate in December from Lamar with a BS in Nursing.  Holly is 20 and will graduate in May with a BS in Biology and Chemistry.  We are members of St. Francis Catholic Community where we serve as Eucharistic ministers, lectors and catechist.  I am a new member of Kappa Delta Gamma, teacher sorority, and serve on a committee for Lamar growth and parent involvement as well as the development of the Honors Program, all under the direction of Dr. Jimmy Simmons, President of Lamar.

Ms. Reagan Slovak
1st Grade

My name is Regan Slovak. I was born and raised in Bellville, Texas. I have a wonderful family, one that I am extremely close to. I have 2 sisters on my Mom’s side, and I have 2 brothers and 1 sister on my Dad’s side. Even though we are extremely close now, growing up we fought over everything; clothes, what television show or movie we were going to watch, and even grandma’s famous homemade sugar cookies.  One of my brothers and I share the same birthday. He was born on my 10th birthday. In May of 2002, I graduated with honors from Bellville High School. I then went to Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. I received my Bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies in May of 2008. I looked for a teaching job for an entire year before I was blessed to find this job at St. Mary Catholic School. Not that I have a lot of free time being a teacher, but when I do I love to be around my friends and family. One of my favorite things to do is watch movies. I also love being outside, running or working out, and I enjoy playing volleyball, softball, and tennis. I love to listen to live music, and go to professional baseball, basketball, or football games.  I really enjoy being around children, and I truly believe that this is the perfect profession for me!

Mrs. Suzy Wimberley
2nd Grade

I am Suzanne Wimberley, the 2nd grade teacher at St. Mary Catholic School.  I have lived in Orange most of my life.  I only moved away to Houston after graduating from West Orange-Stark High School while my husband Jim, finished law school. After my two oldest children were born, I decided I wanted to become a teacher and started attending Lamar University and graduated from there in December 1995.
My husband and I have 4 children, Karaline 23, Jeremy 22, Dalton 11 and Grace 4.  My first teaching job was here at St. Mary School back in 1996, when I taught 1st grade for 2 years.  I also taught 2nd  grade for a year then 3rd grade for 5 years, and now I am back teaching 2nd grade again. I feel like St. Mary School is my home away from home.
When I am not spending time with my family in our pool, at the lake or traveling, I am reading a good book on my Kindle.

Mrs. Leisa Miller
3rd Grade

I grew up in southwest Louisiana and graduated from McNeese State University.  I have taught school in the Brazosport ISD, West Orange Stark ISD, Little Cypress Mauriceville ISD, and now St. Mary Catholic School.  I have taught school for fifteen years and five of those years at St. Mary, which is my favorite job so far.  Two of my favorite activities in third grade are collecting post cards from all fifty states and sending Flat Stanley on an adventure.
My husband is Travis Miller.  We have three daughters Kelsey, Madison, and McCartney.  We love to travel as a family.  But we spend most of our family time working with Madison and McCartney’s livestock and going to shows.  I am a club manager for Dusty Trails 4-H and the secretary of Orange County Livestock Association.

Mrs. JoAnn Sparacino

It has been said that a “teacher affects eternity.” I would like to think that the last 40 plus years have not been in vain.  Being a teacher is an honor, and I feel so blessed to have had a job that I love going to week by week and year by year.  Albert Einstein said, “It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy, creative expression and knowledge in a child.”  I hope that in some small way, I have been able to awaken a love of education in each child who has entered into my classroom.  When I think of teaching, I think of the all the young lives I have taught, and I am filled with pride and admiration for each of them.
I come from a family who put education first.  My mom was an accountant, and my dad was a minister and electrician.  I have two brothers who also college graduates.  My parents taught me how to read before I entered school; therefore, reading and English became my main interest when I went to Stephen F. Austin State University.  I graduated with a double major in English Language Arts and Business Administration.  I began my career at DeQuincy High School and spent two years there.  I moved to Orange, and the next 10 years was spent at St. Mary Junior High.  I made another move to Houston and was in the Aldine District for 23 years.  My husband and I moved back to Orange, and I began teaching at Vidor Middle School; I was there for three years, but when my mother became ill, I retired from public school teaching.   God lead me back to St. Mary 8 years ago, and I felt so blessed to be back.  It seemed strange, but I found myself teaching the children of the parents I had taught so many years ago.
Over the years, I have received many awards, but the one I am so proud of is being in the Who’s Who of American Teachers.  I was Teacher of the Year in the Aldine Independent School District and St. Mary Catholic.  I was Business and Professional Woman of the Year, and LaDonna Club Member of the Year.  My greatest achievement is called teacher and mom.
I have two beautiful children.  My son, Mike is a graduate of McNeese and is living in Rhode Island.  My daughter, Angelia will graduate this December from The University of Phoenix with a degree in Psychology and from the ACE program with a certificate in grade K – 6th.  My grandson, Tristen is a freshman at Little Cypress High School, but he attended St. Mary.  My husband, Anthony is in sales and helps with the girls’ softball team.  I teach 5th – 8th grade language arts and drama as well help with the school newsletter.  When I have time, I love to read and swim.  I am very family oriented, so I believe that St. Mary is one big family, and I so thankful to be a member of such a great team.
